TIME to Walk

We've enjoyed watching the London Olympics this past week and admiring all the skills, dedication and hard work from the athletes, coaches, families and supporters. The setting in beautiful, historic London is amazing, and I can hardly wait to make another visit sometime.

Walking an extreme marathon of 2,400 miles takes a lot of hard work and dedication, too. Geoffrey is heading out the door now to embark on a training walk as he continues to prepare for the Key West to Maine trek in 2013. Geoffrey recommends being slim in order to manage long, long walks.

Getting started is the first step to achieving anything. If you've set a goal to walk two miles a day and you are not in shape, then begin with a quarter-mile, adding more distance each day or every other day. Or take two short walks, which might actually be better anyway. The idea is to do something...not just talk about.

Eat light and eat right. Fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat meats and dairy products. Occasional treats. There are plenty of low-calorie nutritional snacks on the market. We all know what we should eat - we hear it all the time. Nobody forces us to put anything in our mouths - we are in control of that. It's all about planning ahead, not getting overly hungry, and making healthy choices.

So, if you are considering a goal of a long walk...such as one of the many walks to end Alzheimer's Disease, begin now. Come on, - now, like now.......
